Funding Streams: General Resources

This section contains a listing of financial aid guides, directories, and newsletters. These publications are often a good source for grant, foundation, student support information and materials (i.e., grant-writing workshops). For those seeking grants or scholarships, it is recommended that you contact your institution's career center for local opportunities. In addition, when applying for funding, it is important to recognize and address the mission and goals of your potential funders so as to find the best fit.

FINANCIAL AID

U.S. Student Aid on the Web
The U.S. Department of Education's student aid Web site, your "one-stop shop" for up-to-date and accurate data on federal aid available to help you pay for college.

The Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid
This web site answers questions pertaining to loans, grants, and current scholarship offerings.

DIRECTORIES

Directory of Educational Programs in Gerontology and Geriatrics, (7th Edition, 2000), published by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), 1030 15th St. NW, Suite 240, Washington, DC 20005-1503, 202-289-9806.
Contains a listing of approximately 800 gerontology programs in 354 institutions of higher education that offer degrees, credit certificates, specializations or tracks, and fellowships in aging. Cost is $55 + $6.50 postage and handling (p&h) for persons from AGHE member institutions; $85 + $9.50 p&h for all others. All orders must be prepaid. Database on Gerontology and Geriatrics in Higher Education, operated by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education,1030 15th St. NW, Suite 240, Washington, DC 20005-1503, 202-289-9806.
Customized computer searches are available from this listing of over 750 gerontology programs from AA to postdoctoral levels. For a database search form, contact AGHE at aghetemp@aghe.org. Cost is $10 for students, $15 for AGHE members and $20 for nonmembers. (An addition $5 processing fee may also be required for certain searches).

The Resource Directory for Older People, National Institute on Aging (NIA),Building 31, Room 5C27, 31 Center Drive, MSC 2292, Bethesda, MD 20892-2292, 301-496-1752.
This directory contains names, addresses, phone numbers, and web site links to organizations that provide information on matters relevant to the needs of older persons. The links may provide up-to-date information on fellowship and scholarship offerings related to gerontology and geriatrics.

NEWSLETTERS

AAGE Newsletter: The Association for Anthropology and Gerontology, 610-444-5011.
Newsletter includes fellowship and grant opportunities in anthropological studies of aging. Membership $20/students $12.

AGHExchange: A quarterly newsletter of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education ,1030 15th Street NW, Suite 240, Washington, DC 20005-1503, 202-289-9806.
The AGHE newsletter includes principles and practices, resource briefs, national/international news, research and training notes, geriatric education resources, policy information, new member profiles, and AGHE news. $25/year subscription ($30 outside of US); student rate, $12.


AGS Newsletter: A quarterly newsletter published by the American Geriatrics Society, (see Newsletter section on the right-hand side). 350 Fifth Avenue, Suite 801, New York, NY 10118, 212-308-1414.
The AGS Newsletter updates members, the public, and the media on geriatrics issues, public policy developments, society activities and programs, continuing education courses, and available positions.

Anthropology News: A monthly publication(except for June, July, and August) published by the American Anthropological Association, 4350 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 640, Arlington, VA 22203-1620, 703-528-1902.
Contains news of Association affairs, job announcements, fellowships and research funding information, a meeting calendar, and a monthly listing of all books received for review by the "American Anthropologist." Membership dues include a subscription to Anthropology News (professional, $20; student, $10; International, $12). The publication is available by separate subscription for $75/year (9 issues) or by single copy, $12.50 (members) and $15 (non-members).

APA's Monitor on Psychology: A monthly publication of the American Psychological
Association

Monitor on Psychology is distributed to all APA members. The newsletter includes fellowships in psychology, calendar of events, list of meetings, workshops and programs, and other information. Subscription rate is $34/year ($50 outside of US). Single copies of the newsletter can be purchased for $3.00 each or viewed on line at http://www.apa.org/monitor.


Chronicle of Higher Education: A weekly publication (49 issues per year) published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, 1255 23rd Street NW, Washington, DC 20037, 202-466-1000.
The Chronicle of Higher Education contains listings of fellowships in all disciplines, news from campuses in the United States and throughout the world, updates on the latest developments in scholarly research, information technology, and distance education and how they are affecting higher education. There is also a list of recent grants and gifts with deadlines, and thousands of job listings. $75 annual subscription.

Footnotes: A bimonthly newsletter published by the American Sociological Association, 1307 New York Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20005, 202-638-9005.
The newsletter contains updated sociological news, conference notes, public forums, publications, and fellowship offerings. Subscription rate for nonmembers is $35/year. All newsletters can be viewed on-line at the http://www2.asanet.org/footnotes/.


Gerontology News: A monthly publication of The Gerontological Society of America, 1030 15th Street NW, Suite 250, Washington, DC 20005-1503, 202-842-1275, www.geron.org.
Gerontology News reports on policy issues, legislative actions, society events, research results, and recently released major reports on aging. Regular features include Washington updates, research highlights, grants available, new resources and reports, data updates, and calls for papers, nominations, and manuscripts. Subscription rate is $50/year. It can also be viewed online at http://www.geron.org/newsletter/news.htm.

The Nation's Health: A monthly publication (11 issues per year) of the American Public Health Association, 800 I Street NW, Washington, DC 20001-3710, 202-777-2742.
Nation's Health reports on current and proposed legislation, policy issues, and current federal and congressional action. It also includes current agency news, health issues, and internship offerings. One year US subscription is $30 (International rate is $40), or single issues can be purchased for $5.
